"Protection" involves booking an extra flight on top of your existing flights, which most agents would hesitate to do, due to the fact that with the antiquated system, if the original flight was not cancelled correctly, it becomes a no-show, and your subsequent flights would be cancelled.

In the case of a delayed flight with likely misconnection, just ask them to rebook you onto other flight options, which sounds like was what the agent offered.
