Wouldn't it have been easier for the OP's wife to do the LPR documents in the maiden name? The USA doesn't require a woman to change to her husband's name upon marriage. Keeping the maiden name for certain official purposes avoids problems with plane tickets not matching the passport when the passport is changed to the new name, etc.
