I am 99% sure that fares must be paid for in the currency of the POS, so that would make sense, i.e., it's not a PoS issue.

The BookWithMatrix Chrome extension can be useful - if it won't price via aa.com (acting as a TA - this will make sense if you can add the extension) then there's a good chance of phantom availability.
