I just received a response from AMEX from my CFPB complaint. Note that the account they reference is an Amex Platinum by Ameriprise - he's never had any other Amex platinum card.

Your recent correspondence to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) concerning your above referenced account has been forwarded to me for review.

Thank you for taking the time to share this matter with us. Regrettably, American Express is unable to credit 100,000 Membership Rewards (MR) points to your account, as you were not eligible for the promotional offer. Please allow me to respond to your inquiry.

American Express records reflect that we received and approved your application for the above referenced account on May 9, 2016. The promotional offer associated with your application included the opportunity to earn 100,000 MR points after making $3,000.00 in eligible purchases in the first three months of Card Membership. On May 25, 2016, the 100,000 MR points were applied to your account. Your account was reviewed to confirm your eligibility for the 100,000 MR points. Although you were eligible to apply and be approved for the account, the terms and conditions of the promotional offer, which are provided at the time of application, confirmed the bonus offer was
not available to applicants who have or have had this product. As you have a Platinum Card from American Express ending in XXXXX, you are not eligible for the bonus offer associated with your application. Therefore, the 100,000 MR points which were added to your account on May 25, 2016, were removed on August 18, 2016. This is in accordance with the terms and conditions of the promotional offer. American Express is unable to issue 100,000 MR points to your account.
American Express records show you cancelled you Platinum Card ending in XXXX on XXXX X, 2016. We regret your decision to do so; however, we recognize that you have a Platinum Card ending in XXXXX. Our hope is that you will continue to use and find value in your Platinum Card which offers benefits such as complimentary airport lounge access to Centurion Lounges, International American Express Lounges, Delta Sky Clubs, and Air Space Lounges.

For more
information regarding this benefit and many more, or for further questions, please call Customer Service at (800) 615-0403. Representatives are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist you
Here is my dispute response...

(1) American Express ('AMEX') states that I currently own an American Express Platinum Card (R), therefore, I was not eligible for the promotional offer of the American Express Platinum Card (R).
(2) AMEX is incorrect. I do not hold, nor have I ever held, an American Express Platinum Card (R). The account they referenced, ending in XXXXX, is an American Express Platinum Card by Ameriprise (R). On August 19, 2016, I spoke to a customer service representative with AMEX over chat. The chat reference ID is XXXXX. I have attached evidence of this conversation. The customer service representative confirmed that the referenced account ending in XXXXX is indeed an American Express Platinum Card by Ameriprise (R).
(3) The American Express Platinum Card by Ameriprise (R) is a different product/card. On August 19, 2016, I spoke to a customer service representative with AMEX over chat. The representative confirmed that the American Express Platinum (R) card and the American Express Platinum Card by Ameriprise (R) are separate products, including for the purposes of a welcome bonus. The chat reference ID is XXXXX. I have attached evidence of this conversation.
(4) Whereas I have never held an American Express Platinum (R) card, only an American Express Platinum Card by Ameriprise (R), which is a different product line/card entirely, AMEX's reasoning for withdrawing the 100,000 points is a contractual breach.
(5) Whereas there is a contractual breach for the deduction of 100,000 points, I kindly request that AMEX redeposit 100,000 into my Membership Rewards account.
