There is an AA check in desk just beyond the tagged baggage drop off desks, so you don't even have to go upstairs to check your bags.

And yes, you can enter security in D and then take the SkyLink to the terminal for your LAS flight. If the lines are long at the security checkpoint directly above customs, the checkpoint at D30 typically has shorter lines.
