Nice event. The Polaris seat is pretty tight, as anticipated, but not a great deal tighter than a lot of the reverse herringbone products out there. I found the sleeping area in the aisle seats to be sufficiently private when fully reclined but the 'exposure' to the aisle while in the upright position is notable. I am hoping the fit and finish of the production seats are better as the examples are already showing a bit of wear and tear. The center seats will be good for traveling as a couple but with the privacy screen lowered you are quite close to your neighbor. I am also concerned about the armrest (or lack thereof) on the window seat.
The recline mechanism is pretty easy to use, but I found it counterintuitive: push forward to recline, pull backward to bring the seat up (unless I have that wrong?).
A few other notes:
- Seat cushion felt comparable to the sUA business seat, so that's good
- Much more foot space than any existing UA business class seats
- Bulkhead center seats have a wider, deeper footwell than others, but we only got to sample what would be a bulkhead seat
- I was told that the seat is certified for underseat stowage at takeoff and landing. It didn't look like there was much space, though, perhaps enough for a small carryon or attache
- The adjustable headrest is flush to the seatback, which is better as compared to the sCO BF seat where the headrest sits much higher than the seatback
- The 772 configuration will be 50 seats, so the same as the sCO ships and 2 more premium seats than the sUA 777s and no loss of seats. The 777 reconfiguration is to commence early in 2017
- Nobody was willing to comment on premium economy except for the fact that it is "being looked at"
- I was told the 787 will likely have a smaller-dimensioned seat than the 777... I noted my disapproval with that approach given the relatively tight quarters of the 777 seat
- 767 reconfigurations will start in 2017 as well, with three columns of seats (they consider it 1-1-1). Unclear exactly how many seats will be in the configuration, ~30
- We already knew this, but no 757s will get the seat
- They are looking at putting a snack bar into the 767. The 772 reconfiguration will get a snack bar inboard just aft of 1L/R. A350 snack bar will be at door 2 on the outboard side.
Overall, the seat is probably the most underwhelming part of the entire package. It's good but no better than many other products out there, and there are definitely some that beat it. The lounges will be great and the soft product elements look really nice. I expressed concern as to how long many of the 'frills' will last, as cost cutting is irresistible to this company, and was told that they are "pushing back as much as they can" to avoid it. We shall see...
Also, for those in SFO, it seems like the Polaris road show will eventually make its way to the Bay Area, and spend an extended period of time there.
