To be clear you have to do this at the international terminal domestic transfer desk not the domestic terminal. The agents there have much more authority to change flights for arriving int pax than the domestic terminal agents, also once your bags are tagged for the later flight it is quite difficult to change flights at SYD. So do this before getting on the bus.
