+1 and in the case of business colleagues they are probably flying on expensive fares. I'm sure in the case I witnessed they were flying for leisure on cheaper fare buckets.
Anytime I'm flying with someone for business I either pay the $29 fee or we wait at the gate or go to a concourse restaurant or bar. I'd never think of asking an agent to allow them in for free as goodwill even if we are all on expensive M+ fares and I have diamond status and the Non-diamond people I fly with are usually GM or PM and usually we wouldn't drink alcohol anyway.
