I can now answer my own thread: I contacted ANA in Japan, and UNBELIEVABLY they told me that Aeroplan failed to issue my ticket within the time set to do so! They therefore cancelled the booking. I could have rolled up at the airport in BKK and been turned away as having no reservation!

The only thing you are entitled to is travel on the booked and ticketed (as far as Aeroplan is concerned) flights. Aeroplan has in the past bought revenue tickets to fix their screw ups. Settle for nothing less.
As for compensation for your wasted time.... sorry not likely going to get anything.
