Plus they didn't know how things would play out. With a terminal closed and (false) reports of gunfire, this was the smart play. Perhaps they could have diverted to LGA/EWR/HPN, but I imagine you probably weren't the only diversion they were handling that day and depending on the type of plane LGA/HPN might not have been an option.
