You are right - I did LHR-JFK-LAX-OGG. Arrived LAX late evening, OGG flight was 8.30am in the morning. I do remember now I couldn't get any food at night air-side, so bring your own!

In the years prior, I flew LHR-LAX-OGG but had no need to stay overnight as the OGG flights were around 5 - 6pm (form memory, or maybe later, but still same day).

Correct me if I am wrong, but with a boarding card you should be able to go air-side and wait in the terminal?

On a side note, AA lost my bags two times in a row after I rechecked them at LAX for OGG...
