Ok, been looking at further flights in first and these suit my timings.
RDU-DCA 5:56am - 6:59am Canadair RJ 700
DCA-PHL 7:35am - 8:49am Embraer RJ-175
Seeing as there's 36 minutes between 2 RJs, is there any chance of getting my B&R 21"? carry-on on and off the flights in time? Not sure how long things take and only been through DCA once so not 100% familiar with gate layouts.
Flying onwards to LAX later in the day so I could always check the bag at RDU and hope they somehow route it to me but I'm doubtful I would see it again that day.
Things might get sticky if you guys park at a remote stand, then you load the whole plane onto one bus, and everyone with a carryon has to wait for their bags to be unloaded from the plane; you are only as quick as the last person to get their bag and get on the bus. Personally, I hate being at the mercy of other passengers, but that's how DCA is (at least for every RJ I've been on there...some get jet bridges but I have yet to see that unicorn).
My experience with regionals w/ a jet bridge is give yourself 10-15 mins to gather your bag at the gate before your next connection. Some airports have to manually carry bags up the jet bridge, others have elevators for bags, both are frustrating to deal with and have their drawbacks. Add on a bus trip, and you can easily burn 20-25 minutes just getting to the terminal (sometimes more).
If it's a tight connection w/ an RJ, I just check my bag, but there's definitely a chance the bag doesn't make it (but at least you will). All in all, I really hate the RJ carry-on situation, but it is what it is.
As for all other planes mentioned, you should be fine size-wise...although I have gotten onto flights late in boarding (in F) and had no bin space anywhere near my seat.
