Take the Metro (not the train) to Konigs Nytorv station. Once on the surface, walk past the Old Opera House and within a couple of blocks you will be at the start of Nyhavn. The street runs along a canal, and it is lined with restaurants, many of which have both outdoor and indoor seating.

In my opinion, Little Mermaid statue is not worth the effort (and it's tiny).
