To change passport info for AA reservations made prior to updating your profile info:
  1. Log on to AA.com and bring up the reservation for which you wish to change your passport info.
  2. Scroll down to Passenger Summary and click Add/Edit Passenger Information link.
  3. When the Edit Passenger Details dialog opens, scroll down to the bottom to update your passport info and then click Submit.
For the most part the above steps will work except is some obscure cases. I have three international bookings now of which I was able to update the passport number with the new number in 2 of the three cases without a problem. These two reservations were those that had the KTN field blank or pre-filled. The third reservation had the text "OPTED IN" pre-filled in the KTN field which was the reservation in which the updated passport number would show when the reservation was looked at immediately after the update was submitted but would revert back to the old passport number after exiting the reservation. The EXP desk, aa.com support and reservations each said that the passport number could not be updated on-line other than at the airport. Not willing to accept their response I experimented several times and discovered that if I replace the text "OPTED IN" with XXXXXXXXXXX (11 Xs) the updated passport number would persist in the reservation.

What I've not figured out is why one reservation had the KTN field blank, one was pre-filled, and was pre-filled with the text "OPTED IN".
