You may need to get a bit pushy with them, though. Persistence will pay.
Unfortunately, after writing to the rental agency to pursue the claim, they insist that they do not have to refund me any difference. They claim that they are entitled to keep the full amount even though the repair cost is lower. Not sure if this is in any way normal practice, but it stinks nonetheless
