It's worth pausing to suggest that, just because your boss likes IHG, doesn't necessarily mean that you need to follow blindly. Now that you've found Flyertalk you will learn much more than him!
As mentioned, definitely earn points and watch out for the lucrative promotions offered 2-3 times per year.
That said, IHG Rewards Club is basically a rebate scheme. You will earn lots of points that can be used for free nights, etc. But status won't really get you much special treatment at many IHG hotels and you will be paying for most extras such as breakfast. This might not matter if your company pays, but it does make a difference when spending those points on holiday stays.
Other chains, on the other hand, might hand out far fewer points/free nights, but the perks are much better: free breakfast, upgrades that are actual upgrades, lounge access, etc.
Only by knowing your travel habits, budget, destinations, etc. would it really be possible to recommend alternative options.
