I have never directly looked to see if there are reward seats available on the routes I fly. I usually am booked about 6-8 weeks before I travel. Having been trying for almost a year to find flights I can use my 2-4-1- voucher on without success, I am very used to seeing zero availability for any reward seats to any longhaul destination.
Depending on your chosen route, I think perhaps you are being a little unrealistic in your expectations, for example LAX. Of course these can be booked on release at 355 days but not everybody can plan that far ahead. However, if you are more open in your route choice you should be able to find something.
