The thing to do, is to check online for straight redemption seats. If they are there, then you will be able to UuA your paid ticket.

I check first thing every day on my bookings, and more often within a few days from the flight date.

There isn't a lot of availability on most routes, so be prepared to grab it quickly as/when it pops up.
