I work in morning radio. When we do a major promotion, let's look at an automobile giveaway. We give away "A NEW CAR". In reality, it is (usually) a pre-paid lease. Callers will blow up the phone lines for hours each side of a giveaway. We will get one winner from hundreds of thousands of listeners. We will play the hell out of the promo after we get a winner (for weeks). Yay...radio station gives away a car. True. Your chances of winning that car .00000000001%.

Marketing is to promote the message the company wants to promote.
