Ryanair had no problem expanding across Europe with the ULCC model and open seating (until 2014). While it's true that the likes of Ryanair and easyJet now offer assigned seating they hardly had a problem being succesful when it was open.
Yes, but none of intra-Europe flights are anywhere near the 3500+ mile length of Baltimore-London. No meal service is one thing on, say, a 4-hour trip from Indy to LA. It's quite a different thing altogether on a 7-8 hour journey.
