I actually disagree - many, many human beings are not rational - e.g. they sweat and froth at getting on a plane (my wife being one) and yet have zero issues driving on I-75. The statistical probability of death/serious injury on I-75 is way way higher. People are not rational.

On to your broader point, I am doing fine - I am a DM was on a Business/F fare and slept on the floor at ATL airport Monday night then managed to get a flight in Economy to Louisville and had to get a one way car rental. Life has not ended and I do not field aggrieved at not getting a Private Jet (would have been cool though!).
