This link seems to indicate that stopovers are allowed.

I hope that my interpretation of the link is correct. That will allow me to travel from Nagano to Takayama and from Takayama to Kanazawa.
You may understand the situation correctly, I am not sure… Situation is this….
There are several railways running between Nagano and Kanazawa. One is JR Hokuriku Shinkansen, bullet train. Between Nagano and Kanazawa, JR Hokuriku Shinkansen has station stops at Iiyama, Jyouetsu Myouko, Itoigawa, Kurobe Unazuki Onsen, Toyama, and Shin Takaoka.
Using JR Pass you can ride on JR Hokuriku Shinkansen between Nagano and Kanazawa as many times as you want and get off and on as many times as you want using JR Pass at above stations.
Then there are other rail companies which run parallel to JR Hokuriku Shinkansen on Nagano-Kanazawa portion. The rail companies are:
North Shinano Railway
IR Ishikawa Railway
Echigo Tokimeki Railway
Aino-kaze Toyama Railway
These above railway companies are not part of JR system and you cannot ride on above railways using JR Pass.
Exceptions are:
When traveling on JR Nanao Line, you can use JR Pass to ride Kanazawa – Tsubata portion of IR Ishikawa Railway using JR Pass. Cannot stop over between Kanazawa -Tsubata portion and the ride has to be in conjunction with transferring to JR Nanao Line.
When traveling on JR Himi Line and JR Jouhana Line, you can use JR Pass to ride Toyama- Takaoka portion of Aino-kaze Toyama Railway. Again, cannot top over between Toyama-Takaoka portion and the ride have to be in conjunction with transferring to JR Himi Line and JR Jouhana Line.
Was this your understanding of JR Pass regarding Nagano-Kanazawa portion? Or did I end up confusing you more?
