Thanks Canadiancow, that was a good suggestion. I went to the LATAM forum and discovered that in 2015 people reported that TAM agents in Brazil are less "co-operative" in interlining situations with separate tickets. It sounded as if they wouldn't even co-operate with separate tickets within their alliance, Oneworld.
