In fact, when the New Years Meltdown hit NYC in 2013 (?), I just booked myself a hotel in NYC and took the bus back to Boston the next morning. While on the bus, I called Delta and asked for a refund. They were still having problems and were happy to give me a refund (AND having an empty seat to use/resell).
