Had lunch at Salumi today. I tried to get a copy of the menu, but they were out, and are in the process of switching to the summer menu anyway. The line was out the door at 1:15 when I arrived, and still out the door when I left, but moved pretty quickly and I didn't have to wait more than 10 minutes. There wasnt room to eat there, so I took it to go. They keep a plate of sliced salami on the counter for sampling while you wait in line. Mama was in the front window making trofie pasta and the rest of the very friendly staff was stuffing sandwiches
Today's specials were:
Soup: Pappa al Pomodoro (bread and tomato)
Lasagna: Curried turkey with Cherry tomato
Pasta: Penne with octopus
Vegetarian: some sort of white bean dish
Sandwich: Garlic roasted pork with cinnamon (they were out when I got there)
I ordered a bowl of the soup, but was a bit disappointed. It wasnt anything like the Pappa al Pomodoro I had in Tuscany, or what I make at home. It tasted like someone heated up a can of stewed tomatos and threw in some bread.
I also ordered a porchetta sandwich. The porchetta wasnt anything like I had in Italy either, but was very tasty. I've always had it stuffed with garlic and rosemary and lots of salt and pepper, but this was stuffed with sausage. The sandwich, served on a hoagy roll was huge and stuffed full of meat, and topped with sauteed peppers and onions. Very juicy and messy and yummy.
They also serve a sampler platter of their cured meats with bread, cheese, and olives that looked pretty tasty.
Definitely worth a trip back..paging Sweet Willie!!!
