Just for the record - a few weeks ago, I made a new award reservation for later this year and then canceled an existing one I'd made for earlier this month. All my points are still in the account, so that's good. Not the safest thing to try, but figured I'd report it here.
As a final report, I wound up canceling and rebooking an award stay one more time after the above and my point balance remained intact (I was making award bookings for actual trips I was planning on taking, but wound up staying at non-HGP properties which is why I was canceling/rebooking so frequently). Last week I had an mLife stay credit, so I assume I'm going to be fine from here on out and that will be the end of this experiment.
Not sure if anyone else still has award stays outstanding to keep their balance active, but it seems to have worked even if a bit risky.
