Possible. However if it's required just have him go to the Delta counter at his local airport and show them the card. They'll note the,reservation that the card has been shown.

I book tickets ex-JNB frequently due to cost savings,over ex-US and they always require the card when ex-JNB but not when ex-US.

As for an expired card, keep it till you show it at airport. All they want is proof you have the physical card.
