No direct experience with SAS, but this is very standard procedure for UA, see

As far as connecting in SFO, assuming checked-thru bags, the terminal access is fine and will be behind security however, it will depend on SAS's process on issuing international BPs / document checks, you may need to go to the SAS checkin counter.
