I think the cash/miles being forfeited only applies if you are classed as a no show / cancel within 3 hours of departure.

I've cancelled three award tickets during the last 2/3 months and got all of my miles and fees refunded straight away. In each case I made sure to notify them I wanted to cancel at least a few days before travel.
