Luggage claim - airline asking for clothes I bought before paying?

Hi all, newbie here.

Sorry to post in the busiest forum, but I have two hours to get some responses before printing this thread.

I am in Court tomorrow against Norwegian Airlines.

I made a claim for my replacement clothes after they lost my luggage for ten days.

Sent all receipts, etc. Three months later they paid only a fifth of the claim, and told me they would only pay the rest if I sent the clothes I had bought back to them.

By which point I given to a charity shop.

Is this normal practice people? Do other airlines do this?

I have Googled and searched online extensively and can find no other case like this, and further, AA and BA luggage departments both tell me this is not something they have or would ever do.

Thanks all!

Andrew
