Again, don't think that people are going through warehouses humming a merry tune to themselves while they look for bag abc123. For the most part the process is automated whereby the tag is scanned and the system is updated accordingly. The problems occur when, for example, physical barriers stop a bag from moving forward or a truck carrying one or more misplaced bags doesn't make it to an aircraft on time (etc etc). These then end up back in storage until the automated system picks them up again and feeds them back into the system. Eventually everything works out. But these is no one looking for your bag, and no person that you will ever speak to on the phone will have seen a single suitcase during their shift (unless we are talking about general aviation at a smallish airport.)
