I've never tried this, and indeed have re-packed at the Flagship check-in when I could take four bags anyway and only had three, but AA publishes overweight prices for 32-45 kg bags, excluding Europe and Australia.

So maybe it's possible on some carriers (even in the US), but I wouldn't bother.

The more there are wheeled bags (some of which weigh almost 10kg empty!) people don't even know what their bags weigh... that's how I was at the airport with a bag that almost weighed 40kg. If I had carried it anywhere other than on wheels, I'd have known it was too heavy!
