One of the best books written about eating cheaply in the Bay Area is "Eat This, San Francisco" by Dan Leone who writes the cheap eats column for the Guardian (the book is a collection of his columns). It's one one the funniest books I've read in a long time and it gave me what seems like hundreds of new places to try!
