You can rip your pants anywhere. Do you keep a change of clothes on you at all times? (Serious question.)
Of course it's not always an option, but on advice of FT members I have done the travel with a change of clothes (usually work out clothes, light and just enough to get you through the day) and in that case it saved me. Another thing is when you're not in an airport, you can run into Walmart or somewhere and get a pair quick. Never seen shorts in an airport unless it's the PGA tour shop or some specialty store in an international terminal.
