I acknowledge the advice of several people above that there is no use calling but in my case, it was quite the opposite.

According to the rep at the end of the baggage phone line "Today we have seen a bag matching your description at Milan with Air France. It may be your bag, it may not be". After a hold for three or four minutes while the agent investigated further: “We have found your bag. It is in Milan airport. We have requested them [Air France] to return the bag to us". Somewhat strangely the rep said the bag found "matches 87% with the description that has been provided to us”. (How a bag can be matched "87%" is very odd to me, it's not a DNA test, but anyway.)

I've been asked to call back tomorrow when the bag is hopefully at Heathrow so that I can provide information as to its contents for full verification. I'll provide another report back.
Honestly, I wouldn't get your hopes up.
