I have to double and triple check it myself. Even then, I've left the passport at home, and not realized I did not have it on me until parking in the garage at the airport (a 45 minute each way drive for me at the time when I did this), had to call and reschedule a flight so I could go home and retrieve the passport, fortunately I had a long connection and elite status with the airline. So, I understand . I also have a passport holder with metal in it, so it has to go in my bag at security as well, another opportunity for me to misplace it . Since then, I put it in the exact same spot on every trip, every time now. I also take it out during flight as it isn't particularly comfortable for me either when seated, but I make sure it is in the exact same spot for takeoff and landing. Just something I force myself to do now.
