I took "Off Deep Woods Sportsman/Maximum Strength DEET" pump spray with me to Brazil (Rio), plus a bunch of "Off Deep Woods" wrapped insect repellant towelettes unscented (bright green packages). The spray container doesn't have a separate cap, so it can be a little bit messy to carry around after it's opened, but a small sturdy plastic bag (like the 3-1-1 ones) solves that problem. In MN, this stuff is available all summer in most drug stores, Target, large grocery stores, some convenience stores, etc. I divided it between my carry on and checked bag. No problem.

I saw some American brand mosquito repellant down there, although a lot of the label and instructions were in Portuguese.
