Alameer Restaurant & Jaafer Sweets (mid eastern), Kedzie & Lawrence
A friend and I ate at Alameer Restaurant which serves "Fine Mid Eastern Food".
Started out w/the Fatteh w/meat and pine nuts. Fatteh is like hummous w/some whole chick peas, pine nuts and lamb pieces. It was OK, but I prefer either plain hummous or babaganou (sp?) and so did my bud.
I had the Kefta Kabab Sandwich. Which is "Delicious fresh, choice ground beef and persian seasonings, cooked on an open fire and served on Tandouri bread (think pita) w/greens, tomatoes, and marinated onions.
the greens turned out to be cubes of cucumber which was very refreshing w/the spiced ground beef. I liked the sandwich quite a bit, but wish the beef had more spice to it. sandwich was $3.95
Buddy had the Chicken Shawerma (think Shoarma or Doner Kebab). This was the first time I had dined on a Chicken Shawerma, normally it is either beef, lamb or a combination of the two. Very good. We got the last one at 7:30pm which makes me believe they make it fresh every day.
sandwich was $4.25
Alameer serves fresh made juices, we both had carrot juice.
After the meal, we journeyed next door to Jaafer Sweets to try some Mid East sweets.
All items are on the same $/per lb basis, which is $6.50 per lb. We ordered a lb of stuff and it was too much for us, we could only take a bite or two.
Items we tried were: Borma (a round tube of bird's nest type sweet dough w/a mainly pistachio nut mixture inside). Pistachio Ring - puff pastry dough w/pistachio nut mix in center. Kinfa w/custard and Kinfa w/cheese (the bird's nest dough on a flat sheet stuffed w/either cheese or custard). Almond bar and pistachio bar - mega nuts and honey mixture on flat sheet.
Mid East sweets are not overly sweet whatsoever, so those who really enjoy only sweet sweets might not enjoy these sweets.
Out of all, I liked the Kinfa w/custard and the pistachio bar.
Alameer and Jaafer Sweets are located in the Albany shopping center on Kedzie about a 1/2 block north of Lawrence.
Alameer is open 24 hours and offers free delivery.
