For a couple blocks east of Broadway, Argyle Street (about 5000 North) on the north side of Chicago is our compact version of a “Vietnam Town”. I don’t know of a greater concentration of Vietnamese stores in Chicago. The Argyle stop on the Red Line for the El stops right in the middle of “Vietnam Town”.
I revisted a restaurant called Pho 888. Pho is a Vietnamese rice noodle soup, typically with slices of beef in it. Also added are bean sprouts, basil, chopped scallions/garlic in an aromatic broth. VERY Tasty and quite a treat after being out in Chicago’s cold windy weather. The Pho is a large bowl of soup and is more than enough for a meal.
I recently stopped in and for some reason did not feel like a bowl of Pho, so I tried a specialty of the house, Muc Rang Muoi or Squid sauteed in a salty onion sauce. WOW what a great dish! The squid is very tender and the sauce is this onion sweet yet salty taste that melds well with the white rice served alongside. This was sooo good that I tried the Shrimp done the same way. The shrimp were sadly not near as good, they had the shells on (which I don’t mind, but many will not eat) and the shrimp also had part of the head on. Which I found to be a tasty addition, but again many probably would not. So I definitely recommend the Squid dish.
