If you're looking for discounted award tickets at times when UA knows it can sell all the seats for money, you don't know how saver awards work. You're going to have to cough up for Standard Awards or pay for regular tickets at peak times. Occasionally, saver awards might be available a couple of days before flights at peak times, but flying to Hawaii at holiday peak times requires hotel and rental car bookings in advance, which works against the flexibility needed to snare last-second saver awards. Last minute car rentals on Maui two years ago at Christmas (maybe it was 2013) were over a $150/day for a sub-compact 2-door. UA releases saver awards well in advance for off-peak travel.
