If QF carried you to a port where you could not cross the border - QF has to pay a hefty fine - and pay for a seat back to your original departure point
Hence the concern to get it correct
CNS to MEL on QF is always a domestic flight however in the OP's case it was the first flight of an international journey CNS QF xMEL QR xDOH QR BCN.
As the CSA in CNS would be checking bags from CNS to BCN snd issuing QF & QR boarding passes they need to check that the pax has all the necessary documentation for Spain.
