Just to add confusion:
In Germany no one is oblige to have an ID. There are quite a few people not having one. You only have to prove with some kind of legal documents (so either passport or ID or other official documents). Yes it is handy to have both, but legally not required.
My kids (7 and 10) do not have an ID - only passports.
It would be quite weird to show a document to enter your home country that you normally do not need in your own country.
