I was looking for advice on how to ensure the complaint got to a manager, not sympathy.

Being 'diplomatic' when situations like this arise will probably garner more favour than going in with both barrels.

Next time, try and select an aisle seat. If you find yourself in the same type of situation, approach the cabin crew before departure and tell them of your concerns. They may be able to fix it. The pax you encountered recently may well have a medical condition and confronting and affronting him may turn out the worse for you.

Whilst there may have been mistakes from the side of EK on this occassion, live and learn and be better prepared next time - diplomatically of course .

I was being sarcastic about confronting them. I didn't do anything on the plane precisely out of respect to the person in question. I was already sitting at the window when she turned up and sat in the middle seat, with her male companion sitting at the aisle seat (he was not that slender either).

Actually, I tried to confine my initial post to the question of how to get it escalated, deliberately avoiding getting into the substance of the complaint because it's one of those issues (along with window shades, reclining and all the rest of it) that tends to draw firm views on both sides and not many in the middle. I ought not to have made any reference to the substance of the complaint.

There is a lot to be said for an airline making an effort to at least appear empathetic to a complaint of this kind. Regardless of what I was looking for, I would have been far less irritated had (1) the agent not implied that I was mistaken about the passenger's obesity, and (2) my follow-up e-mail asking for the complaint to be escalated had not been ignored.
