I got lucky a couple of years ago when a LH agent got me on an earlier flight in Frankfurt. I'd asked on a lark, not really expecting anything, and was surprised when she said yes. (Economy class ticket, no status, no nothing). So yes, it can happen in Europe, but I agree it's probably rare compared to North America. And I'd say the odds of it happening in IST are probably close to nil.
