If we're suggesting alternate routes, I'd also offer up YYZ-YVR-AKL-MEL. An extra stop vs the UA route through LAX, but the connections in both YVR and AKL are easy and I've been quite pleased with NZ. Although never flown it in Y on long-haul routes.
Y on long-haul with NZ is just the same as AC. Maybe a touch more legroom, but they do the same HD thing in Y.
