Interesting read. I never knew that the moon buggies at iad were originally conceived as a solution to the "walking long distances" problem. I would appreciate modern bus gates a lot more if they were extremely close to check-in. But, this is rarely the case when flying out. At SZX, for example, the bus gate waiting area is a solid 1000 meters from the check-in area.
