If it's the AAdvantage Platinum card, it's very common for Citi to offer to waive the AF when you call to cancel. I got the card 2 years ago: The first renewal, they gave me a waived AF + 1000 bonus miles every month I spent $1000 for 12 months, which meant I earned 24000 miles. The second renewal, they only have me a waived AF.
My impression is that the "retention offer" you get depends a lot on the amount of usage you make of the card; I suspected the OP's would not help much in that regard -- especially now that Citi seems to be less generous on these than in the past -- but I could be wrong.
