You can get 1p - 2p per Nectar point if you stick around for good redemption promotions.

Virgin miles are worth more than Nectar points from Virgin although it obviously depends how much you spend on West Coast and East Coast. You need another source of VS miles though as you'll clearly never get enough for a good redemption purely via train travel.

However, add in 20k from an Amex Gold, 6k from a Virgin ISA, 3k from Virgin Wine, 19k from a Virgin Black credit card etc and you may see the beginning of a plan .....
