Take the money and if they have travel insurance with coverage for delayed luggage, go shopping and buy essential toiletries and clothes. Keep the receipts and forward them to the insurance company for reimbursement when your daughter and her husband are back.
BA will not be able to upgrade them on a JL or QF flight.
The BA card IS to cover the costs of essentials.
If you did try and claim on insurance their first thought will be 'Did BA offer you anything?' and they are likely to check with BA as well.
