I used a GUC on one one-way where the LAX-NRT leg had a seat. Great. Done. I'm waitlisted for NRT-SIN. I can choose my seat in biz on that first flight (and all four certs still show as "open" but I assume that will change soon). Should NRT-SIN come available, I should get it automatically.

On another itinerary, it's a flight with one flight number all the way through, and the agent told me that I can't cherry-pick the segment I want for the upgrade since both segments have the same flight number (this is 283, LAX-NRT and then NRT-BKK).

Does that sound right? So I'd have to gamble on this one?
